Early in 2007 I went to Berlin to research new work and curatorial projects for Apartment. While I was there I found a discarded broken umbrella on waste land at the site of the Berlin Wall, close to the intersection at Bernauer Strasse. I photographed it and took to back to Manchester with me. I began to repair it, removing all the rusted metal frame and replacing it with a new frame and handle. Several months later when I returned to Berlin to do more research for a project with Axel Lapp, I replaced the repaired umbrella close to where I had found it, and then photographed it as near as possible to where I had taken the original image.
